• Tag rules work backwards now: when you set up a rule that tags a merchant, one switch also tags every past transaction that matches, so you don't scroll through months of history tagging by hand.

Why we built it: This is the second half of a member request. Rules that set a category could already clean up your history the moment you created them, but rules that add tags only worked on new transactions. Now both kinds of rules work the same way.

What you can do

• Flip one switch: when you create or edit a rule in Settings → Transaction Rules, turn on Apply to existing transactions? and save. The rule tags everything in your history that matches, then keeps tagging new transactions as they come in.
• Know the number before you commit: as you fill in the rule, it checks your history and tells you "Found 27 past matches," so there are no surprises about how much you're about to change.
• Start from a transaction: open any transaction on the Transactions page and hit Automate This. The rule starts with that merchant already filled in, and the same switch is right there.
• Sweep again any time: every rule on Settings → Transaction Rules has an Apply to history button, so you can re-run a rule later, like after you've broadened what it matches.
• See what happened: when it finishes, a note tells you exactly how many past transactions were tagged.

Good to know

• Safe to run twice: transactions that already have the tag are left alone, so re-running a rule never doubles anything up.
• Your transactions only: in a household, applying a rule to the past touches your transactions, not your partner's.
• Deleting a rule keeps the past: removing a rule stops the automatic tagging going forward. Anything it already tagged stays tagged.
• The count is your checkpoint: there's no single undo for a big sweep, so if the "Found 27 past matches" number looks off, tighten up the rule before you save.
