Income gets a real name

v0.1.26

💵 Money coming in used to be one word: Income. Now it's a paycheck, a rent cheque, a dividend or a side gig, and your old transactions have been re-filed too.

  • Income is its own category now, sitting first on your categories board with seven kinds underneath it: Paycheck, Self-Employment, Business Income, Rental Income, Investment Income, Retirement & Benefits, and Other Income.

Why we built it: We have subcategories and have extensive bucketing for spending. Income has kind of been neglected where users may have paychecks and maybe some side gig income. We want to be a comprehensive personal finance management tool. Income should be treated more prominently.

What you can do

  • See what each deposit actually was: on Transactions, a rent payment now says Rental Income and a paycheck says Paycheck. Open any row and the picker offers all seven under an Income heading.
  • Read your old history the same way: we went back through your existing deposits and re-filed them using what your bank told us at the time.
  • Re-file in bulk and have it stick: select as many transactions as you like and change the category in one go.
  • Keep your own rules in charge: anything you've set up under Settings → Rules still wins. If you've told Synx that deposits into a particular account are rent, that's what they stay.
  • Stop seeing income in your budgets: money coming in was quietly offered as something you could set a spending target against. It isn't any more.

Good to know

  • The same payer can land in two different kinds. Which kind a deposit gets is driven by how your bank labeled it, and banks aren't consistent about that from one month to the next. So you may see one payer split across two kinds of income. Select the ones you want together and bulk edit them to whichever kind you'd rather they all sat in.
  • Your numbers didn't move. Your dashboard income figure, the cash flow band and your spend totals show exactly what they showed before, because they count everything under Income together rather than any one kind. This changed the names on things, not the math.
  • Credit cards are never income. A payment to your card or a refund from a shop used to occasionally get filed as earnings, which made a month look better than it was. Synx won't do that on its own any more. You can still file one as income by hand if that's genuinely what it is.
  • Business Income starts empty for most people. It's there for anyone running something on the side who wants those payouts kept separate. An empty category is normal, not broken.

Where this is heading

We're building toward better support for people running a personal business, where money coming out of that business is counted as a distribution to you rather than treated the same as a paycheck from an employer.

That needs the product to know the difference between one kind of income and another, which is what shipped today. None of it is here yet, and personal Synx stays exactly as it is for anyone who never wants it.
